This is heavily based on Benjamin Tan's fish completions:
https://gist.github.com/bnjmnt4n/9f47082b8b6e6ed2b2a805a1516090c8
Some differences include:
- The end of a `--from`, `--to` ranges is also considered.
- `jj log` is not completed (yet). It has a different `--revisions` argument
that requires some special handling.

I left the "merge-tool-edits-conflict-markers" option unchanged,
since removing it would likely break some existing configurations. It
also seems like it could be useful to have a merge tool use the default
conflict markers instead of requiring the conflict marker style to
always be set for the merge tool (e.g. if a merge tool allows the user
to manually edit the conflicts).

Layers are now constructed per file, not per source type. This will allow us
to report precise position where bad configuration variable is set. Because
layers are now created per file, it makes sense to require existence of the
file, instead of ignoring missing files which would leave an empty layer in the
stack. The path existence is tested by ConfigEnv::existing_config_path(), so I
simply made the new load_file/dir() methods stricter. However, we still need
config::File::required(false) flag in order to accept /dev/null as an empty
TOML file.
The lib type is renamed to StackedConfig to avoid name conflicts. The cli
LayeredConfigs will probably be reorganized as an environment object that
builds a StackedConfig.

conflicts: add "git" conflict marker style
...
Adds a new "git" conflict marker style option. This option matches Git's
"diff3" conflict style, allowing these conflicts to be parsed by some
external tools that don't support JJ-style conflicts. If a conflict has
more than 2 sides, then it falls back to the similar "snapshot" conflict
marker style.
The conflict parsing code now supports parsing Git-style conflict
markers in addition to the normal JJ-style conflict markers, regardless
of the conflict marker style setting. This has the benefit of allowing
the user to switch the conflict marker style while they already have
conflicts checked out, and their old conflicts will still be parsed
correctly.
Example of "git" conflict markers:
```
<<<<<<< Side #1 (Conflict 1 of 1)
fn example(word: String) {
println!("word is {word}");
||||||| Base
fn example(w: String) {
println!("word is {w}");
=======
fn example(w: &str) {
println!("word is {w}");
>>>>>>> Side #2 (Conflict 1 of 1 ends)
}
```

Scott Taylor

conflicts: add "snapshot" conflict marker style
...
Adds a new "snapshot" conflict marker style which returns a series of
snapshots, similar to Git's "diff3" conflict style. The "snapshot"
option uses a subset of the conflict hunk headers as the "diff" option
(it just doesn't use "%%%%%%%"), meaning that the two options are
trivially compatible with each other (i.e. a file materialized with
"snapshot" can be parsed with "diff" and vice versa).
Example of "snapshot" conflict markers:
```
<<<<<<< Conflict 1 of 1
+++++++ Contents of side #1
fn example(word: String) {
println!("word is {word}");
------- Contents of base
fn example(w: String) {
println!("word is {w}");
+++++++ Contents of side #2
fn example(w: &str) {
conflicts: add "ui.conflict-marker-style" config
...
Adds a new "ui.conflict-marker-style" config option. The "diff" option
is the default jj-style conflict markers with a snapshot and a series of
diffs to apply to the snapshot. New conflict marker style options will
be added in later commits.
The majority of the changes in this commit are from passing the config
option down to the code that materializes the conflicts.
Example of "diff" conflict markers:
```
<<<<<<< Conflict 1 of 1
+++++++ Contents of side #1
fn example(word: String) {
println!("word is {word}");
%%%%%%% Changes from base to side #2

The previous iteration of `jj simplify-parents` would only reparent the
commits in the target set in the `MutableRepo::transform_descendants`
callback. The subsequent `MutableRepo::rebase_descendants` call invoked
when the transaction is committed would then rebase all descendants of
the target set, which includes the commits in the target set again.
This commit updates the `MutableRepo::transform_descendants` callback to
perform rebasing of all descendants within the callback. All descendants
of the target set will only be rebased at most once.

The working-copy revision is usually the latest commit, but it's not always
true. This patch ensures that the wc branch is emitted first so the graph node
order is less dependent on rewrites.

If you have multiple remotes to push to, you might want to keep some changes
(such as security patches) in your private fork. Git CLI has one upstream remote
per branch, but jj supports multiple tracking remotes, and therefore "jj git
push" can start tracking new remotes automatically.
This patch makes new bookmarks not eligible for push by default. I considered
adding a warning, but it's not always possible to interrupt the push shortly
after a warning is emitted.
--all implies --allow-new because otherwise it's equivalent to --tracked. It's
also easier to write a conflict rule with --all/--deleted/--tracked than with
two of them.
-c/--change doesn't require --allow-new because it is the flag to create new
tracking bookmark.

This is a workaround for command name completion. On zsh, the complete position

for "jj <TAB>", { args = ["jj"], index = 1 } is provided, and our expand_args()
helpfully fills in the default command "log". Since args[index] is now "log",

uses the repo only for ancestry lookup, but I think tx.repo() is better here.

This makes completions suggest aliases from the user or repository
configuration. It's more useful for long aliases that aren't used very often,
but serve the purpose of "executable documentation" of complex and useful jj
commands.
An earlier patch "resolved" aliases, meaning that any arguments following an
alias would be completed as if the normal command had been used. So it only
made sure that using aliases doesn't degrade the rest of the completions.

standardized it to say "Rebased ? commits onto destination" for both

cli: add "absorb" machinery and command
...
The destination commits are selected based on annotation, which I think is
basically the same as "hg absorb" (except for handling of consecutive hunks.)
However, we don't compute a full interleaved delta right now, and the hunks are
merged in the same way as "jj squash". This means absorbed hunks might produce
conflicts if no context lines exist. Still I think this is more intuitive than
selecting destination commits based on patch commutativity.
I've left inline comments to the tests where behavior is different from "hg
absorb", but these aren't exhaustively checked.

Unlike other documented aliases, it can be redefined by the user.
However, I think it's important for people to be informed that `b`
exists.
I left `amend`, `unamend`, and `ci` undocumented, since I think we were
considering removing or at least discouraging them.

cli: include commit summary when attempting to modify an immutable commit
...
Previously, attempting to modify an immutable commit only showed the
ID of the commit being modified, which wasn't very helpful when trying
to figure out which immutable commit is being modified at a quick
glance.
This commit prints the commit summary as a hint to make it simpler for
the user to see what the immutable commit is without having to run
`jj show <commit-id>`.

Maybe we can add comparison of ids, commits, etc., but I don't have a practical
use case right now. If we add lt/gt, it might make sense to implement them on

I also changed lhs.and_then(..) to (lhs, rhs).map(..) since we don't need
short-circuiting behavior here.

I added "[aliases: <name>]" as part of the first line of the help text

revset: introduce type-safe user/resolved expression states
...
This helps add library API that takes resolved revset expressions. For example,
"jj absorb" will first compute annotation within a user-specified ancestor range
such as "mutable()". Because the range expression may contain symbols, it should
be resolved by caller.
There are two ideas to check resolution state at compile time:
<https://github.com/martinvonz/jj/pull/4374 >
a. add RevsetExpressionWrapper<PhantomState> and guarantee inner tree
consistency at public API boundary
b. parameterize RevsetExpression variant types in a way that invalid variants
can never be constructed
(a) is nice if we want to combine "resolved" and "unresolved" expressions. The
inner expression types are the same, so we can just calculate new state as
Resolved & Unresolved = Unresolved. (b) is stricter as the compiler can
guarantee invariants. This patch implements (b) because there are no existing
callers who need to construct "resolved" expression and convert it to "user"
expression.
.evaluate_programmatic() now requires that the expression is resolved.

local_working_copy: do not create file or write in directory named .jj or .git
...
I originally considered adding deny-list-based implementation, but the Windows
compatibility rules are super confusing and I don't have a machine to find out
possible aliases. This patch instead adds directory equivalence tests.
In order to test file entity equivalence, we first need to create a file or
directory of the requested name. It's harmless to create an empty .jj or .git
directory, but materializing .git file or symlink can temporarily set up RCE
situation. That's why new empty file is created to test the path validity. We
might want to add some optimization for safe names (e.g. ASCII, not contain
"git" or "jj", not contain "~", etc.)
That being said, I'm not pretty sure if .git/.jj in sub directory must be
checked. It's not safe to cd into the directory and run "jj", but the same
thing can be said to other tools such as "cargo". Perhaps, our minimum
requirement is to protect our metadata (= the root .jj and .git) directories.
Despite the crate name (and internal use of std::fs::File),
same_file::is_same_file() can test equivalence of directories. This is
documented and tested, so I've removed my custom implementation, which was
slightly simpler but lacks Windows support.

I'm going to add "checked" version of to_fs_path(), but all callers can't be
migrated to it. For example, an error message should be produced even if the

This patch also adds error variants to propagate InvalidRepoPathError. They
don't use ::Other { .. } so the errors can be distinguished in tests.

build: fix cargo publish
by symlinking cli/docs->docs
...
I think `cargo publish` will currently fail because of the
`include_str!()` in `cli/src/commands/help.rs` pointing to
`../../../docs/`, i.e. outside of the crate directory. This patch
attempts to fix that creating a `cli/docs` symlink to `docs` and makes
the `include_str!` use that symlink. I hope the symlink will be
resolved at `cargo publish` time so it also works in the published
crate.
Because symlinks don't work well on Windows, I updated `cli/build.rs`
to include the original path (the one pointing outside the crate) if
`cli/docs` is not a symlink, so the regular build still should work on
Windows (but `cargo publish` won't).
Thanks to Yuya for proposing this solution.

We will need this in the `jj git sync` command to perform a fetch that behaves
the same as the `jj git fetch` command.
* Refactor out `git_fetch` and move it to `git_util.rs`
* Also move `warn_if_branches_not_found`. It is only used by `git_fetch`
* Move `map_git_error` to `git_util.rs` and update other call sites to import correctly.
* Update using statements as needed.
All tests still pass as this is a noop.

cli: don't use format_*() in annotate template, truncate author, omit commit id

The problem is that author names are variable-length by nature, and format_*()
can be customized in that way. Commit ids are redundant in most cases where
commits aren't diverged.
We could add some format_short_fixed_length_*() hook points, but it would
probably be easier to just customize the annotation template at all.

It would be nice to not need to go the documentation website. This aims
to solve that by introducing the concept of keyword to the help
command.
Basically, keywords are things that we want to add help messages to,
but they don't necessarily have an associated subcommand.
For now we only have two keywords:
- `revsets`: Shows the docs for revsets
- `tutorial`: Shows the tutorial that is on the documentation
You get the keyword content by tipping `jj help --keyword revsets` or
`jj help -k revsets`.
You can also list the available keywords with `jj help --help`.
It would be nice to have all the documentation on the keywords, maybe
a next commit could do it.

Allow unsetting config values similar to `git config unset`.
```bash
some-val
$ jj config unset --user some-key
$ jj config get some-key
Config error: configuration property "some-key" not found
For help, see https://martinvonz.github.io/jj/latest/config/ .
```
Unsetting a key, which is part of a table, might leave that table empty.
For now we do not delete such empty tables, as there may be cases where
an empty table is semantically meaningful
(https://github.com/martinvonz/jj/issues/4458#issuecomment-2407109269 ).
For example:
```toml
[table]
key = "value"
[another-table]
key = "value"
```
Running `jj config unset --user table.key` will leave us with `table`
being empty:
```toml
[table]
[another-table]
key = "value"
```

The doc says --remote "shows all tracking and non-tracking remote bookmarks
belonging to this remote." Suppose --remote=<remote> is a name pattern like
"*@<remote>", it doesn't make sense that "jj bookmark list --remote=<remote>"
includes local-only refs (whose "<name>" doesn't match the pattern.)
The "--remote=<remote> --tracked" combination is still valid to exclude
remote-only (i.e. untracked) refs.

This also allows some minor optimizations to be performed, such as
avoiding recomputation of the connected target set when
`MoveCommitsTarget::Roots` is used since the connected target set is
identical to the target set (all descendants of the roots).

"revset: resolve 'HEAD@git' just like other

of the HEAD@git symbol.
Suppose we implement colocated workspaces/worktrees #4436 , there may be multiple
Git HEAD revisions. This means HEAD can no longer be abstracted as a symbol of
the "git" remote.

templater: add pad/truncate functions
...
As I said in the preceding patch, I settled on separate pad/truncate functions
instead of a function taking multiple optional parameters. It's less efficient
to process truncation and padding independently, but I don't think that would
matter.
The order of arguments follows the current f(..., content) convention. We can
also add a method syntax, but I'm not sure if it's useful. In order to call a
method of Template type, we'll need to coerce printable object to Template:
concat(author.email()).truncate_end(10).pad_end(10)
^^^^^^
String -> Template
FWIW, String type could provide more efficient truncate/pad methods.

Custom backends may rely on networking or other unreliable implementations to support revsets, this change allows them to return errors cleanly instead of panicking.
For simplicity, only the public-facing Revset and RevsetGraph types are changed in this commit; the internal revset engine remains mostly unchanged and error-free since it cannot generally produce errors.

This will be used by truncate_start/end() template functions. I considered
adding a template function that supports both padding and truncation, but the
function interface looked a bit messy. There may be (max_width, ellipsis,
left|middle|right) parameters for truncation, and (min_width, fill_char,
left|center|right) for padding. I'm not going to add ellipsis and centering
support, but it's weird if pad(center) implied truncate(middle).

We were discussing whether `jj backout` and `jj duplicate` should
support `-d/-A/-B` just like `jj rebase` does. `jj new` already
accepts `-A/-B` but it does not accept `-d`. It does support `-r`,
however. It seems like `-d` is a better match for `jj new` since it
creates a commit on top. So this patch adds support for that flag
too. I now think `-r` sounds misleading for `jj new`, but I left it in
for now.

I believe printing both the start and end times is excessive for a
summary. For now, I have it print just the start time for consistency.
I intend to change it to print the ending time later.
I was a bit torn on whether to use `format_timestamp(self.time().start())`
or `self.time().start().ago()`. The latter looks better, but is less
configurable and worse for dates long ago. In the future, we could add a
`format_op_summary_timestamp` function and/or a template function that
uses `.ago()` for recent dates and absolute dates for old dates.

formatter: flush color escape sequence when raw() stream is requested
...
This ensures that the data printed through the raw stream is colorized if the
formatter already had color labels, and if the raw data doesn't reset the
surrounding color. This would only matter in templates containing
label(.., raw_escape_sequence() ..) expression.

templates: add raw_escape_sequence
...
Templates can be formatted (using labels) and are usually sanitized
(unless for plain text output).
`raw_escape_sequence(content)` bypasses both.
```toml
'hyperlink(url, text)' = '''
raw_escape_sequence("\e]8;;" ++ url ++ "\e\\") ++
text ++
raw_escape_sequence("\e]8;;\e\\")
'''
```
In this example, `raw_escape_sequence` not only outputs the intended
escape codes, it also strips away any escape codes that might otherwise
be part of the `url` (from any labels attached to the `url` content).
Not all formatters (namely FormatRecorder) are supported yet.

refactor: Allow the aliases map to map to arbitrary types.

For #3673 , we will have aliases such as:
```toml
'upload(revision)' = [
["fix", "-r", "$revision"],
["lint", "-r", "$revision"],
["git", "push", "-r", "$revision"],
]
```
Template aliases:
1) Start as Config::Value
2) Are converted to String
3) Are placed in the alias map
4) Expand to a TemplateExpression type via expand_defn.
However, command aliases:
1) Start as Config::Value
2) Are converted to Vec<Vec<String>>
3) Are placed in an alias map
4) Do not expand
Thus, AliasesMap will need to support non-string values.

subtle. Let's provide the other name as a hidden alias to help users

When `format_short_signature(signature)` is set to `signature.name()` the author names are not yellow like other signature types (eg email and username). When the commit signatures have no colors, they blend in making it hard to distinguish between signatures and commit messages.
If just `name` were set to `yellow`, just like email and username, it affects the colorization of branch names making them also yellow despite them being designated as magenta. Setting `author` and `committer` to `yellow` is specific enough to allow branches to keep their colors while still coloring signature names. This is known to affect signatures in both 'log' and 'show'.

cli: get author timestamp of description template in consistent way
...
There's a subtle difference. If the original commit was discardable, its author
timestamp is updated by CommitBuilder.

Stacking at AliasExpanded node looks wonky. If we migrate error handling to
Diagnostics API, it might make sense to remove AliasExpanded node and add
node.aliases: vec![(id, span), ..] field instead.
Some closure arguments are inlined in order to help type inference.

cli: Warn if specified remote branch not found for jj git fetch
...
* First fetch from remote.
* Then check tx.{base_repo(),repo}.view().remote_bookmarks_matching(<branch>, <remote>).
This has to happen after the fetch has been done so the tx.repo() is updated.
* Warn if a branch is not found in any of the remotes used in the fetch. Note that the remotes
used in the fetch can be a subset of the remotes configured for the repo, so the language
of the warning tries to point that out.

cli: pass &Ui to parse fileset/revset/template functions
...
Deprecation warnings will be printed there. auto_tracking_matcher(ui) could
be cached, but there aren't many callers right now, so it should be okay to
parse and emit warnings for each invocation. Other than that, the changes are
straightforward.

cli: add specialized function for pre-validated templates

I'll make parse_<language>_template() require &Ui, but these cached templates
should be re-constructible without access to a Ui.
Maybe we can split a parsed template object into RevsetExpression-like
evaluation tree and interpreter environment, but that'll be a big challenge.

...
This will help simplify warning handling in future patches. I'm going to add
deprecation warnings to revset, so Ui will be required in order to parse a user
revset expression.
revset_util::parse_immutable_expression() is inlined as it's a thin wrapper
around parse_immutable_heads_expression().
